The local economy
A STILL LIVELY TRADES AND CRAFTS SECTOR
The local food trade can pride itself on its know-how and the quality of products from a terroir where environment-friendly, reasoned agriculture is developing more and more. Duck foie gras, jam, cow’s milk cheese, goat’s cheese (the Pays is located in the Crottin de Chavignol AOC area), brioche, and Charolais beef can be found on the stalls of traders and those of farmers directly selling their products in the markets of the Pays Loire Val d’Aubois.

The weekly morning markets play an essential role in local life. With its numerous traders setting up stalls in the squares, pedestrianized streets and halls, the Sancoins market is the main market in the Pays and attracts many tourists in summer, as well as regular customers from the département of Cher and the adjoining departements of Nièvre and Allier.

AN INDUSTRY SPECIALIZING IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS

The local industry, with some activities dating back to the Middle Ages, has seen real expansion only from the 18th and 19th centuries, through iron and steel metallurgy, lime and cement making, and tile and brick making.

This gives the Pays Loire Val d’Aubois almost 200 years of experience in building material production. Over half of the Pays’s businesses work in this sector.

ECONOMIC ACTIVITY ZONES FOR BUSINESSES
In the Pays, they are 7 economic activity zones to accommodate new businesses or enable existing businesses to expand further in the sectors of industry, trades and crafts.
HIGH-QUALITY FARM PRODUCE

The Pays Loire Val d’Aubois is comprised of three agricultural production areas :

  • the Vallée de Germigny, an area of mixed farming and grazing land for Charolais cattle and sheep breeding,
  • the Val de Loire where intensive maize cultivation is developing,
  • the Champagne Berrichonne, a large plain with cereal and oleaginous crops, as well as goat farming in the Crottin de Chavignol AOC area.

Thus, Charolais cattle breeding predominates in the Pays Loire Val d’Aubois. The Grivelles livestock market, in Sancoins, is the trading place for sheep and also, above all, for big cattle, and calves sold for fattening in France and abroad (mainly in southern Europe). In 2002, this market of national and European interest has traded over 240 000 head of livestock, including 46% of big cattle.
